Typescript of Groce's expanded version (completed in 1943) of his American Portrait Inventory: 1440 Early American Portrait Artists (Preliminary Volume) published by the New Jersey Historical Records Survey in 1940. The expanded volume gives entries for 3,000 artists who were practicing portraitists in the United States before 1861. Typescript is marked up with edits. Although never published, this version was turned over to The New-York Historical Society and was superseded by The New-York Historical Society's Dictionary of Artists in America by Groce and David Wallace (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1957).
